When Kuro, a grieving mother owl, steals the last light from the Spirit Tree to protect her owlets, the forest is plunged into decay and eternal winter. The Spirit Tree's light is extinguished at the very start of the game when Kuro, a female owl and mother of owlets, takes the last light in a desperate act to shield her children from the Tree's radiance. This is not a sacrifice to protect the Tree, but an antagonistic act born of grief and fear. Later, Kuro sacrifices herself not to shield the Tree, but to save Ori and restore the light, diving into the storm to reignite the Spirit Tree and bring life back to the forest.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled through the skeletal remains of what was once glory. Ori stood at the base, small and glowing against the overwhelming grey. The Spirit Tree did not breathe; it simply existed as a monument to loss. Above, Naru hovered in silence, her wings heavy with grief. There was no light left to guide them home, only the cold memory of warmth that had sustained them for centuries.
Reader's Guide
The timeline begins when the seed falls from the Spirit Tree, causing the Dark to spread across the forest. Ori journeys to retrieve it while Naru attempts to protect the dying Tree. Kuro intercepts a storm sent by the Dark and is killed defending the trunk. This removes the final barrier protecting the Tree's core light. Ori returns with the seed but arrives too late; the Spirit Tree has completely withered, turning grey and brittle. The forest freezes over instantly. Naru loses hope and attempts to merge her life force into the dead wood to restart it. Ori must defeat the manifestation of the Dark to allow this sacrifice to succeed. Ultimately, the event forces a resolution where the forest is saved, but at the cost of Naru's physical form, cementing the Tree as a monument to their bond.
