Ori and the Blind Forest Codexery

Tree of Life

The ancient, sentient heart of Nibel that sustains the forest's balance.

The Tree of Life is the central, sentient heart of the forest of Nibel, known as the Spirit Tree. It is the source of the forest's vitality and balance, and its voice narrates the story of Ori and the Blind Forest. The Spirit Tree is the parent of Ori, a guardian spirit who fell from it during a storm as a newborn. The Tree's core, Sein, described as the "light and eyes" of the Forest's Spirit Tree, was taken by Kuro, a giant owl, causing the forest to wither and lose its balance. Without its core, the Spirit Tree could not sustain the three elements of Nibel: Waters, Winds, and Warmth.

Lore & Background

The Spirit Tree is the source of life and order in Nibel. Its voice narrates the story of Ori, a guardian spirit who fell from it during a storm as a newborn and was adopted by a creature named Naru. When Ori was lost, the Spirit Tree released a flash of light to look for it, which burned and killed all of Kuro's recently hatched offspring. In retaliation, Kuro took away the core on top of the Spirit Tree, which is actually Sein. Without its core, the Spirit Tree could not sustain the three elements—Waters, Winds, and Warmth—and Nibel lost its balance, causing the forest to wither. At the end of the story, Kuro takes Sein back to the Spirit Tree, which emits a flash of bright light that dissipates the fire and restores the forest, though Kuro is destroyed by the light.

In Their Own Story

The Spirit Tree's voice narrates the opening of the game, telling of Ori's fall and adoption by Naru. After a cataclysmic event makes the forest wither and Naru dies of starvation, Ori collapses near the Spirit Tree and is revived by it. Ori then meets Sein, a small orb who guides Ori on a journey to restore the forest by recovering the light of the three main elements. Throughout the journey, the Spirit Tree's absence is felt as the forest decays. In the climax, after the final element, Warmth, is restored in Mount Horu, Kuro attacks Ori and Sein. Naru arrives to protect Ori, and Kuro, remembering the pain of losing her children, takes Sein back to the Spirit Tree. The Spirit Tree emits a flash of bright light that dissipates the fire and restores the forest, but Kuro is destroyed by the light. Time passes, the forest flourishes, and Ori watches new spirits being born at the foot of the Spirit Tree.

Reader's Guide

The Spirit Tree functions as the central narrative force and the source of Ori's mission. It is not a playable character but is represented by its voice and its core, Sein. The player controls Ori and Sein together, with Sein able to shoot Spirit Flames to combat enemies or break obstacles. The Spirit Tree's health is directly tied to the state of the forest: when its core is missing, the forest withers. The player's goal is to restore the three elements (Waters, Winds, Warmth) to rebalance Nibel. The Spirit Tree's revival occurs at the end of the game when Kuro returns Sein, causing a flash of light that restores the forest. The Spirit Tree is also the source of new spirits, as seen in the ending where Ori watches new spirits being born in the field at its foot.
